World Standards

Phase Technology is actively involved in the world’s major national and international standardization organizations. As members of relevant subcommittees, we contribute to test method specifications that are used as quality standards for petroleum products.

ASTM International

ASTM is an international organization that develops and publishes voluntary technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services.

ASTM Standards for petroleum include description of the test instrument, manufacturer model number and operation procedure. To meet global petroleum quality benchmarks, the world’s major refineries must certify product to ASTM standards.

Phase Technology test instruments meet and comply with these ASTM International methods and standards:

ASTM Method Description
ASTM D7945 Standard test method for determination of dynamic viscosity and derived kinematic viscosity of liquids by constant pressure viscometer
ASTM D7397 Standard test method for cloud point of petroleum products (miniaturized optical rate method)
ASTM D6660 Standard test method for freeze point of aqueous ethylene glycol base engine coolants by automatic phase transition method
ASTM D5972 Standard test method for freeze point of aviation fuels (automatic phase transition method)
ASTM D5773 Standard test method for cloud point of petroleum products (constant cooling rate method)
ASTM D5949 Standard test method for pour point of petroleum products (automatic pressure pulsing method)

ASTM Standard  Description
ASTM D7467 Standard specification for finished fuel blends of between six (B6) and twenty (B20) percent biodiesel (includes both ASTM D5773 and D7397)
ASTM D6751 Standard specification for biodiesel B100 (includes both ASTM D5773 and D7397)
ASTM D4985 Standard specification for low silicate glycol based engine coolant for heavy-duty engines requiring a pre-charged of supplemental coolant additive (includes ASTM D6660)
ASTM D3699 Standard specification for kerosene freeze point (includes ASTM D5972)
ASTM D3306 Standard Specifications for ethylene glycol base engine coolant for automobile and light duty service (includes ASTM D6660)
ASTM D2880 Standard specification for turbine fuel oils pour point (includes ASTM D5949)
ASTM D1655 Standard specification for aviation turbine fuels freeze point (includes ASTM D5972)
ASTM D975 Standard specification for diesel fuel oils and cloud point (includes ASTM D5773)
ASTM D396 Standard specification for fuel oil pour point (includes ASTM D5949)

Energy Institute (EI)

The Energy Institute (EI) is a professional membership organization for those working in the energy industry. In 2003, the U.K.-based Institute of Petroleum (IP) became part of EI through a merger with the Energy Institute.

IP designations are still used in the specification of test methods in the petroleum industry. Phase Technology test instruments meet and comply with these EI/IP standards: EI/IP Standard Description IP 435 IP freeze point specification, joint method with ASTM D5972; IP 446 IP cloud point specification, joint method with ASTM D5773

EI / IP Standard Description
IP 435 IP freeze point specification, joint method with ASTM D5972
IP 446 IP cloud point specification, joint method with ASTM D5773
