The characterization of plastic/resin
polymers in solvent mixtures is important
during their production and finished
states. The Phase Technology analyzer can
be used to elucidate the phase transitions
in these samples. The temperature range
under which the samples are transformed
from being clear to cloudy, opaque, or
otherwise precipitate out of the solution
mixture may be clearly delineated. For
example, the phase plot below illustrates
the cloud point of a plastic polymer at
10% dilution in solvent. The mixture is
heated at a fast rate from room
temperature until it becomes clear at
elevated temperatures (above 60°C).
Subsequent cooling at a slow and constant
controlled rate shows that the polymer
turns cloudy at about 50°C. |
